oops, I fell off the internet

Which isn't really true, I just was terribly busy this holiday season - work was crazy, then I was out and about all the freakin' time, so when I was home I didn't really want to do anything but read Avengers and Iron Man comics. (I love my Marvel Digital Subscription!)
I haven't really been doing anything creative, but I have been making plans.

Right now I'm in the lovely suburbs of Philadelphia, in the Great Valley area. My goddaughter and her parents are hosting me for a week of craftiness, cooking, game-playing, and reading excellent books. (Maya just got started on the Chronicles of Narnia, and is reading A Wrinkle in Time.) I have two volumes of the adventures of my beloved Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin in my luggage, but I'm mostly rereading Iron Man fanfiction (Civil War fix-it fics - so schmoopy.)

I have been keeping up with a few fests, but not in any big way - I'll have to catch up when I get home.

So, quick fandom / genre-related hits:

  • Finished S4 of Merlin, loved it. Beautiful visuals, excellent acting, and the problematic parts were not sufficient to keep me from loving it.

  • Doctor Who Christmas Special - really enjoyed it. This was an amazing episode. Had a really good time with it.

  • Got my parents watching my Marvel Cinematic Universe Collection. \o/ (I ♥ Phil Coulson!)

  • Christmas was pretty awesome - it's not really my holiday anymore, but we have a secular gift-exchange at our house since my dad likes giving us things. He apparently ransacked the BBC store for me this year - Merlin action figures and Doctor Who gear all over. We were really cute about making sure the various animals gave people gifts, too. And all five of us actually spent a good portion of the evening together and we GOT ALONG and it was beautiful. Dinner and a round of Ticket to Ride: Europe made for a fantastic family fest.

  • Watched Super 8 with Sam and Keet last night, and it was really awesome. Sam described it as "The Goonies if JJ Abrams had directed," (more lens flare!). I thought that was pretty accurate. Maybe the Goonies + E.T. It surprised me, how much I really enjoyed it. It was nothing at all what I was expecting. So, yay!

  • I found the elusive Iron Man / Captain America Annual 1998 in an anthology in a comics store here in King of Prussia, so I know it exists now. I did not buy the anthology (too big, too expensive - I'm an all-carry-on traveler this trip), but I will look for it or order it when I get home. \o/

I am looking forward to a New Year's season full of jigsaw puzzles (a tradition), board games (\o/), and bonus Cheesemas! Yay Cheesemas!
At some point I'll post photos, when I get them off my phone.

Bradley James, you amaze me

So, Bradley James was so impressive in this latest episode of Merlin. (Colin was, too. And Tony. Good grief.) But man, Bradley. Amazing.

Also, I made art for it, speed painting for the [dreamwidth.org profile] camelot_fleet spoiler party.
It's rated PG, mostly for angst.

Saturday

Brief updates:

- Work deadline got away from me, with the result that the last few days at the office were frantic with updates, and we barely got our stuff done. I have a long list of rushed items for next week as well. Fun times.

- Difficulties with having a dynastic name: people looking for my brother on Facebook often friend my dad instead. Is it wrong that I find that hilarious?

- So so so addicted to more fanfic. Holy cow. X-men fanfic is eating my life. In the best way. Also, my obsession with mpreg has successfully translated from Harry Potter fandom. What is wrong with me. ;)

- Went to a preview showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and it was AWESOME. I need to go back again. I have a few nits to pick about it, and one big issue of an internal logic hole, but on the whole it was amazing and such a beautiful experience. The audience was not totally fans, so when I squealed and clapped I had a few companions but not as many as I had when watching the movies at Cons. Also, I ♥ Neville.

- My nonprofit corporation obligations are increasing, bringing with them a slew of committee meetings. This will hopefully lead to some great things for the organization, but it is definitely something that I will have to adjust to in my schedule.

- Except for the illustrations for my paperlegends big bang, I am frustrated by art. I am incredibly inspired lately, but stymied by my own ability, not only with art in general but with the software and digital techniques in particular. Big Bangs have a separate category for me, since they are so often done with extreme time limits - working at marathon fast-paint settings loosens some of my internal critic's stress, and allows me to produce without too much angst. I think I need to try some other prompts or subject matter, after this big bang is done. I may take a break from fan art, even though that means that I'll probably get even less community feedback. (boo.) Just to try to push some skill envelopes.

- Writing? What writing? At least the writers' meetup has been going well.

progress

Made a bit more progress with the Big Bang art. Have lots of meetings to look forward to this month. Most of them related to the nonprofit corp, but some others.
Meet-ups were great. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Group has EXPLODED with new members. It's kind of awesome.
Tomorrow is Harry Potter - I'm definitely looking forward to it. I may even wear my hat, if I remember to bring it with me to work. I have to leave extremely promptly so I have time to eat before the 6:30 show. I love preview showings. ;)

Reading SO MUCH X-men fanfic, with a few Merlin binges thrown in, and some nostalgic Harry Potter revisits. It's been fun.
Recs, anyone? Especially X-men rarepairs, by which I mean Alex/Armando. Ahem.

Must it be true that if one is having a steampunk submarine adventure, there must at some point be a giant tentacled sea monster? Just checking.

cleaning up and catching up

Ok, I have finally moved a bunch of the boxes that have been cluttering up my apartment for months. Plus I have stacked all the ApolloCon stuff to one side, so while it's still there, it's no longer actively blocking my creative outlets. (By which I mean the sewing table is once again clear.)

So, ApolloCon happened. It was fun. My costume went over well on Saturday. I got to meet Darth Vader at the Artist Reception.
It's Darth Vader!
Yay! A thousand dreams from my childhood given form! You know it's a party when the Sith crash it.

Among the boxes that I moved/emptied were the ones holding my grandmother's doll collection. All of the dolls have now been photographed and placed on display in my apartment. She had a really amazing group from Poland, dressed in regional folk costume. The workmanship and tiny details are lovely.
Cracow Polish Folk Costume Doll Detail embroidery - Lowicz region

Now to get the rest of my stuff organized and/or thrown out.

I'm also well into the art for my paperlegends entry, which is good. I was worried for a bit, but now things are coming together, I think.

I can't believe I'm whining about fandom again

I wish there were a way to join a couple of fandom summer fests as a cheerleader / non-writer team member, because I hate to think that all the squee and fun is going to be on private team comms. Bah. Then again, actually playing those things is frustrating for me - I'm used to being able to discuss my work with my teammates, not keep it all anonymous. I've done the anon team thing and it was kind of awful. (Snarry Games, I remember you fondly! ;D )
/end random fandom whine

In other news, I need fic recs for E from Merlin - she wants G/PG stuff mostly, well-written plotty stuff low on the sex, pre-slash is ok but no explicit slash. Het and femslash negotiable. She is almost finished with Season 1.

I'm going to go through my delicious lists later to see about some plotty friendship fics. Anybody have anything good off the top of their heads?
I can't WAIT for her to meet Gwaine. :D

stuff, things, travel

So I find myself suddenly traveling to Nashville for a conference next week. Anybody know any good places to visit if I have downtime? I've only really ever driven through on my way somewhere else, taking time to visit the Parthenon and not much besides. I shall be there on weekdays.

This comes at an interesting time of year for me, since we are gearing up for ApolloCon the last weekend in June. (Houston's Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Convention, full of awesome! I'm in the Art Show, too. Come on down!)

Work = Intense as well. Fun, but intense. We've got some stuff going on. :)

Art is progressing. I'm thinking that one of my challenge entries is going to involve major angst, and Colin Morgan's face just lends itself to that so well. I'll have to find some cute fic to get me through it all. LOL.
I've been contemplating fic writing, too. Although I must have a rule that I make progress on my original fic (I can pretend I'm writing fanfic for it, right?) before I indulge.

Speaking of fic, I am almost at the point in my BSG viewing where it will be safe for me to announce that I would like to read all the Adama/Roslin fic in the land. I may also have to create a very belated reaction post to the end of the series, as everyone I know has lately reiterated to me just how badly the show ends.

I have several Dreamwidth invite codes if anybody wants one, by the way.

long time, no post

I have really dropped the ball here - not even a Card of the Day for a while!
I've been enjoying life, though - family gatherings, game playing, eating and drinking out, bar trivia, meeting the new cat ) (possible name: Greebo), taking care of my car, and not doing any art or writing. I am trying to get the writing done now, but it's hard going. Rar.
I saw the first episode of Game of Thrones, and will probably catch up on the rest with On Demand or something next month. Saw the premiere of Doctor Who on BBC America and was amazed, bewildered, and enchanted once again. Ogled spoileriffic photos from the set of Merlin as well. Yay!
I really have to focus, though, because things are happening that are on a schedule. First there's the wedding next weekend (you all know how much I love marrying people!), for which I must finish up the script. Then there's ApolloCon coming up very soon, and making sure I have all the materials ready for that. (If you're in Houston for the last weekend in June, come on by! We're awesome!)
Also coming up: Art Car Parade! w00t!

angsting about art )

Today I am concentrating on the writing, hopefully sometime this week I can go back and look at the art WIPs with a slightly more optimistic attitude.
