I can't believe I'm whining about fandom again

I wish there were a way to join a couple of fandom summer fests as a cheerleader / non-writer team member, because I hate to think that all the squee and fun is going to be on private team comms. Bah. Then again, actually playing those things is frustrating for me - I'm used to being able to discuss my work with my teammates, not keep it all anonymous. I've done the anon team thing and it was kind of awful. (Snarry Games, I remember you fondly! ;D )
/end random fandom whine

In other news, I need fic recs for E from Merlin - she wants G/PG stuff mostly, well-written plotty stuff low on the sex, pre-slash is ok but no explicit slash. Het and femslash negotiable. She is almost finished with Season 1.

I'm going to go through my delicious lists later to see about some plotty friendship fics. Anybody have anything good off the top of their heads?
I can't WAIT for her to meet Gwaine. :D

stuff, things, travel

So I find myself suddenly traveling to Nashville for a conference next week. Anybody know any good places to visit if I have downtime? I've only really ever driven through on my way somewhere else, taking time to visit the Parthenon and not much besides. I shall be there on weekdays.

This comes at an interesting time of year for me, since we are gearing up for ApolloCon the last weekend in June. (Houston's Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Convention, full of awesome! I'm in the Art Show, too. Come on down!)

Work = Intense as well. Fun, but intense. We've got some stuff going on. :)

Art is progressing. I'm thinking that one of my challenge entries is going to involve major angst, and Colin Morgan's face just lends itself to that so well. I'll have to find some cute fic to get me through it all. LOL.
I've been contemplating fic writing, too. Although I must have a rule that I make progress on my original fic (I can pretend I'm writing fanfic for it, right?) before I indulge.

Speaking of fic, I am almost at the point in my BSG viewing where it will be safe for me to announce that I would like to read all the Adama/Roslin fic in the land. I may also have to create a very belated reaction post to the end of the series, as everyone I know has lately reiterated to me just how badly the show ends.

I have several Dreamwidth invite codes if anybody wants one, by the way.

FIC: Isle of Apples (Merlin, G)

I was prepping some stuff for posting to AO3 and figured out that I had missed posting one of my camelot_fics entries. This one is for the theme "Forever and a Day" with the challenges to use the word "winter", use no direct dialog, and set it outside Camelot.

FIC: Arrival of the Stranger (Merlin Gen, PG)

Another contribution to [ profile] camelot_fics, this time the theme was "Dreams", and the challenges were to write an AU, mention children or childhood, and to use a minor character as the protagonist.

I attempted all the challenges, as usual.

And I ended up so engaged by this when I was writing that I considered a series of other episodes, but I'm not sure they'll ever see daylight. Hard enough keeping up with my original fic, after all!

Ficlet: Arthur's Journal

So the first mini-challenge at [ profile] camelot_fics was to create a brief journal or diary entry from the POV of a Merlin character.
I don't think many folks read my entry, or cared for it, but I found it in my Scrivener files recently so here it is. Mild (and cryptic) spoilers for Season 3 up to 3.10.

Tangled report

Holy cow, this is the first Disney Princess movie I have seen where my immediate reaction (after the choking up and gushing) was wanting to write fanfiction.
Seriously, I was SO INSPIRED by this film, I spent an hour after it with my tarot cards and some blank paper plotting out a story (original, that is), and imagining the fanfic in my head.

I want to go see it again.

New Year's festivities are in full swing here, Maya has danced and sung her crazy little heart out, we've played some games and had a great dinner and more festivities are still to come.

it's a meme!

I will write a drabble for the first few commenters to request one. In return, they have to post this in their journal (if they want). You may request the character and/or the pair for the following fandoms: BBC's Merlin, Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender
I'll write any pairing, but I reserve the right to choose the rating. :)

Not setting a firm number, but if I get overwhelmed with prompts (hahaha) I'll edit to close the meme.

seeking beta reader

So is anybody out there who isn't doing the challenge willing to look over my entries? Nothing would ever be more than 1000 words long, and they're all likely to be heavy on the Season 3 canon AUs with guest characters back at Camelot for whatever reason.

I posted something like this earlier with a big long blather about my AU ideas, but now I am actually producing stuff for the challenge, so a reader would be really nice.

on writing for Merlin

Seriously, this is just a bunch of whining about how hard I find certain kinds of fanfiction and writing in general, and wishing to find beta readers with tolerance for whining and rarepairs with their Arthur/Merlin.
Interested Merlin fans, read on. Everybody else can just skip this one. (Season 3 spoilers up to the most recent episode, plus speculation about alternative futures.)
oh, woe upon the canon AU ideas and trying to write characters who don't HAVE character )
In conclusion, where do people look for beta-readers for story stuff, rather than SPAG? Brainstorming and streamlining folk, basically.
I should write more anyway.

Fic: Kidnapping the King (G)

Oh, dear, this last episode of Merlin was so inspirational I had to write for it!
Whatever is the world coming to? Next thing you know there will be epic Merlin fics posted over months and months with ridiculous worldbuilding and extreme rarepairs!

Title: Kidnapping the King
Author: [personal profile] zephre
Rating: G
Characters: Arthur Pendragon, spoiler: Elena of [did anybody catch the name of her father's lands?]
Fandom: BBC Merlin
Summary: It's up to the king's friends to make sure he doesn't work too hard.
Author's Notes: This is my first Merlin fic! Straight from the Write or Die work area to you, no beta involved.

fic full of spoilers for Merlin up to 3.06 )

I have no idea what's going on, but I just had to get that one little moment written down. And now I have a whole lot of backstory happening in my head as well. One version for each character I ship with Arthur, LOL.

Top 5s: Places, Movies, Snupin Stuff

Ok, this is me caught up on my Latin homework (for the moment) and continuing the Top 5 Meme.  I'm going to try to knock out several in one block this time.  I am saving the crafty / art ones until I have the time to actually sit with my various sites and portfolios and things.  Plus I took photos of the first sophisticated doll I ever made, when I was 14, for Emily's Top 5, so I'll have to post those before I can do that one.
Also, I have a shoebox full of photos from my high school trips abroad and my college years - those are going to be scanned soon and posted to Flickr.  So watch out, college buddies. (I admit there are a few folks I wish I could airbrush out, but I will maintain the integrity of the photos.)

Top 5 places you've visited (and loved) )

Top 5 things you do to stop being bored
1. Read fanfiction.
2. Draw something.
3. Start a crafty project
4. Grab a beloved book off the shelf to re-read.
5. Start organizing my apartment.

Also, I thought of a woman to add to my favorite characters list: Philippa Somerville from the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett.  In fact, most of the women in the Lymond Chronicles are rockin' awesome, with Sybilla right up there after Philippa. I still haven't finished the Niccolo books, I have got to get on that.

bullet points

  • my best friend really really really wants me to read Twilight.  sigh. I probably should read it just so I'll have a point of conversation with my younger cousins, who aren't readers but have apparently all finished the series.
  • she also spent some time discussing the ways that she thought my characterization of Draco Malfoy in Far Away as Moonshine echoed that of Michael Corleone in The Godfather series.
  • and we spent our lunch talking racebending and white-washing in film, something she's been aware of and talking about for longer than I.
  • good times, despite the sparkly vampire complication.

  • Friday evening I actually went out. Yes, really. Had dinner and then drinks with friends. I visited a new bar I'd never been to, and had some lovely Scotch.
  • The lightning on Friday was apocalyptic.  Made me wish I had a camera with instant shutter speed, to capture it.
  • Saturday morning at the gas station, a lady saw my "I'm blogging this" t-shirt and said, "Hey, can I ask you about blogging?"  So we ended up having a conversation about social media while my tank filled. Bizarre.
  • Spent Saturday evening at my aunt's house. We had dinner and conversation and played two rounds of Scrabble.  Fun times.
  • Today Mom and I made a HUGE dent in my cleaning. We moved the sewing cabinet, and put away almost all the books, although actually really they're all thrown willy-nilly onto shelves, not actually organized.  It'll take me weeks to get them organized.
  • I hung two more pictures on the walls, too.
  • Baking soda really is a miracle cleaner.

  • I have two more bigbang arts to do, and then a fest to illustrate before Snupin Santa hits.
  • I'm working on a concept for a series of fairy tale illustrations in Prismacolor and ink, for my Advanced Visual Arts studio class this semester.

Jul. 2nd, 2009

I have this unfinished WIP that was really close to my heart - and still is, in its way, and I'm wondering now whether or not to finish it.  It's a one-shot featuring Harry and  Luna, in my Far Away as Moonshine ''verse, which I love to pieces despite the extreme rarepair-ness of it.  :P

I also have a bunch of prompts to fulfill for my now-defunct but still inspiring table on Luna.
Haven't been feeling the writing bug lately, but now that my ApolloCon stress is mostly done for the year, and I'm gearing up for Azkatraz, HP is back on the brain. (And I just can't do fic for Merlin yet. It took me years to work up to it in HP, maybe someday.)

To write, or not to write? Maybe I'll just keep drawing...

And oh crap, officially less than two weeks to the Con and I need to frame my art for the Gallery and Auction!
And print postcards... And test my DVD cable... And move all the pr0n off the  laptop that's traveling with me.  Yeep.

a slight Draco/Neville obsession?

I have been obsessively rereading A.J. Hall's Lust Over Pendle universe for the last couple of months.  I have a very few other sources for the Draco/Neville pairing, but it's really my only reliable source for finished stories at the moment.
Anybody know another source to feed the random obsession?  Like Snape, Draco is a character I can pair with many people depending on the situation and characterization, and who is writing.

Also, today I created a wholly awful and traumatic scene from the Far Away as Moonshine universe in my head while driving, and I am reluctant to actually carry it through to print. Nobody dies, although it's a very close thing, but it puts Draco through such an emotional wringer that it hurts me to relive it. I'm sure the other authors on my list know of what I speak.
Maybe I'll try transcribing it later.
