looking for a beta

So... I need some outside eyes on my art for this Harry Potter exchange.
I don't want to say too much about it because it's an anon fest, of course, but it's rated G and only peripherally connected to canon. Basically I'd like somebody to take a look and tell me if it makes sense. And, you know, let me know if you see an extra arm or something.

Anybody?

accomplishment

I just turned in my last entry for a holiday fest. Egads, that was a late deadline.
But YAY! I am done until the New Year! (when I have two more fests, only one anon, though.)

bullet points

  • my best friend really really really wants me to read Twilight.  sigh. I probably should read it just so I'll have a point of conversation with my younger cousins, who aren't readers but have apparently all finished the series.
  • she also spent some time discussing the ways that she thought my characterization of Draco Malfoy in Far Away as Moonshine echoed that of Michael Corleone in The Godfather series.
  • and we spent our lunch talking racebending and white-washing in film, something she's been aware of and talking about for longer than I.
  • good times, despite the sparkly vampire complication.

  • Friday evening I actually went out. Yes, really. Had dinner and then drinks with friends. I visited a new bar I'd never been to, and had some lovely Scotch.
  • The lightning on Friday was apocalyptic.  Made me wish I had a camera with instant shutter speed, to capture it.
  • Saturday morning at the gas station, a lady saw my "I'm blogging this" t-shirt and said, "Hey, can I ask you about blogging?"  So we ended up having a conversation about social media while my tank filled. Bizarre.
  • Spent Saturday evening at my aunt's house. We had dinner and conversation and played two rounds of Scrabble.  Fun times.
  • Today Mom and I made a HUGE dent in my cleaning. We moved the sewing cabinet, and put away almost all the books, although actually really they're all thrown willy-nilly onto shelves, not actually organized.  It'll take me weeks to get them organized.
  • I hung two more pictures on the walls, too.
  • Baking soda really is a miracle cleaner.

  • I have two more bigbang arts to do, and then a fest to illustrate before Snupin Santa hits.
  • I'm working on a concept for a series of fairy tale illustrations in Prismacolor and ink, for my Advanced Visual Arts studio class this semester.

Non-HP Reveal: yuletart: Game Player, General, Musician, Courtier; G

Title: Game Player, General, Musician, Courtier
Gift for:[info]leyna55
Artist: [info]zephre
Rating:: G
Fandom: The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett
Character: Francis Crawford
Warnings: none
Artist notes: The pose and clothes owe much to the mid-16th century portrait paintings of Agnolo Bronzino. The spinet is based on decorative models from periods far too late for Lymond; I trust that a bit of artistic license here can be excused. The chess pieces are based on a museum set from the Tudor period. The hanging on the wall is the emblem of the Crawford Family of Scotland. Many thanks to my mom for her help during an enjoyable few hours spent skimming our favorite moments of the series in search of descriptions of Francis. ;)
Summary: Being a portrait of Francis Crawford of Lymond.

REVEAL: Snupin_Santa: Birthday Kiss, PG-13

I'm so behind... the next few posts are going to be holiday fest art reveals.

Title:
Birthday Kiss
Giftee: [info]midnight_birth
Artist: [info]zephre
Rating: PG-13
Pairing(s)/character(s): Severus/Remus
Disclaimer: This is a not-for-profit fan work based on fictional characters in fictional situations.
Warnings: none
Summary: The door swung open and Remus couldn't help but reel back from Severus's furious expression. The latter's hair and clothed were disheveled, and he was covered in some kind of white powder and something red and sticky. Remus had seen the look a few times before, and it meant no good. Something had gone horribly wrong, he could just sense it.

Before Remus got as much as a "hello" out, he was pulled in and the door was slammed shut behind him.

"You don't usually come home so early," Severus growled, practically ripping Remus's coat off. He turned Remus around to face him and pressed their lips together. The kiss had potential to turn passionate, but it was over almost as soon as it began.

no weird Merlin dreams this time

Last night I finished watching the first season of Merlin. This morning's weird dream was unrelated to the show. It was actually about my family and home improvement. And definitely weird. But it was definitely a festival of television last night, with a marathon viewing of the last few episodes.
Thank goodness for the interwebs, I say!
Such a fun show. Merlin is a doll. It's too bad I find doing TV-based fanarts so intimidating. Perhaps some of my friends can convince me to give it a try anyway. Portraiture is something I'm good at, right?

Got a meeting today and I'll probably pop into a discount store on my way home, then it's a weekend of arts and crafts!
I really want to finish the original illo I've been plugging away at since the New Year, and I have some character portraits I hope to squeeze in before the exchange deadlines loom.
I think one of my goals for 2009, now that I'm part of a weekly art posting community (not that I need to pick every single week), will have to be being a bit more choosy in my exchange sign-ups. I do want to have time to do more tarot cards and more original or other-fandom stuffs.

Ah, my files have done copying.  Time to get ready to go!

new year crunch

January is a crunch time at work, and I have been home only a couple of hours (awake anyhow) for the last few days. Next week looks like more of the same. It's CRAZY busy at the office and I have tons of club meetings and an evening art class and I just haven't had a space to breathe since I got back from Philadelphia.

I am thinking that there are fests signing up that I am missing...
And I could do a Year in Art post...
And I think reveals have gone up that I missed... (will have to catch up this weekend for thank-yous and such)

The only thing I've managed to do fandom-wise is my clunky Happy Birthday sketch for Snape, which I will post when I get back to Ginevra, I hope. Sofia is a mighty little machine, but she doesn't keep any art.

What am I forgetting?
Don't you hate that feeling?
And seriously, I have this Godzilla quilt practically designed in my head, but I haven't had the chance to get out my fabric yet. It's all in a basket on my desk! Curses! Where is my Time-Turner?

Ok, lunch is over. Time to be crunched by the Jaws of Industry.
I hope this settles down by February.

ART Reveal: Rock Collection (Snarry, PG-13)

[info]snarry_holidays reveals are up, so I can reveal (like it was a big surprise) that I made this:

Title: The Rock Collection
Artist: [info]zephre
Media/Medium: Photoshop
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Snape/Harry
Warnings: none.
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. Not for profit fan artwork only.
Summary: Harry would have to send Eileen a thank-you gift for her courtship advice; he would never have thought to add this particular rock to Severus's collection on his own.
Artist's Notes: [info]thesewarmstars asked for Snape to have a collecting habit that Harry could find out about. In addition to the actual crystal Harry adds to Snape's collection, he gives a Muggle sweet found in seaside towns, one that usually has the name of the town or resort written in sugar on the inside. This 'rock' has been doctored for Harry's particular purposes. ;) Since I like the idea of Harry and Severus's mum conspiring to make him happy, I'm thinking it's one of Severus's childhood favorites and she clued Harry in.

And [info]alisanne wrote The Best Laid Plans (link goes to IJ) for me! Eee! It's a very cute story featuring Albus Severus/Scorpius and matchmaking at Hogwarts. Win!

ART: Rose Seizes the Night (Rose/Scorpius, NC-17)

Once again I am behind on my fest reveals.

Title:
Rose Seizes the Night
Artist: [info]zephre
Pairing: Rose/Scorpius
Rating: NC-17

Artist's Notes:  Originally drawn for [info]hp_summersmut for [info]i_octopus. Thanks to my beta, you know who you are. I was happy to be able to include a special request:"for Rose/Score - the imminent (and highly unwanted) arrival of Ron whilst the couple are in fligrante delicto (as Ron's ensuing coronary would be worth the inclusion of these characters in the epilogue)"

back in town

I'm back from my second wedding weekend, with good news!
Mom called at 10:30 to tell me our power came back on! Hurrah!

Wedding weekend was lovely, but wow it was cold in the Catskills at night. I hadn't packed for that, had to borrow clothes.  ;)
Wedding itself was a fairy tale, and it was wonderful to see so many friends, old and new.  I even got a referral while I was there; one of the groom's friends was so enchanted with the ceremony he wants advice about his own wedding. Not sure if that will be another wedding for me or not, as he lives in the UK and that brings its own special brand of legal hurdles, but it would be nice. Still, interfaith weddings are what I do, so I'm happy to email the couple about theirs. Fun times, indeed.

Now that we have the power back I can't wait to really get going on my pending art projects. Whee!

Snape Quilt Photos

I finished this a little while ago, and [info]drachenmina just got it in the mail, so here are the photos.
The center piece is an illustration from Mina's fic "A Most Impractical Cat" and there are some choice quotes from the piece free-motion quilted into it.

mm, fabric

So Mom and I went for the super crack this morning - a trip to The Painted Pony in La Porte. I asked Mom if she wanted to come with me to the fabric store and she was kind of indifferent to the usual places, then I said, "Or I might trek out to La Porte," and she changed her mind. The rooms full of quilter's cottons call to us, my precious calls.
Mom claims that I bought half the store, but really I only got a few yards of some really amazing, bright prints. Including one that may become the back of the Snape Quilt. There were such amazing and wonderful designs there, and I am *loving* the retro splashy flower prints so much.  Wild. Unfortunately, there were no prints that really truly screamed "potions" or "chemistry", but what I got I think is pretty evocative anyhow. If you squint, you can see magic/science in them. And they work so amazingly well together. Squee!

The Snape quilt (which is a small wall hanging, actually) is going to be so awesome, although I may have to do the Snape center piece several times. Mom and I discussed different techniques for getting him onto the fabric and "painted", so if I have lots of leftover attempts maybe I'll make little pillows or something.
You know what I didn't buy? Thread. Oops. I am so going to need more black for this.

Also found a fun pirate print, and it's an unwritten rule in this househould that if you find a cool pirate print, you buy enough for the family stash.

On the drive home, Mom and I discussed ethics, philosophy, and religion, or lack thereof. I think that having these important conversations with an atheist offers me some very good perspective, as a person and as a minister.
On the topic of irreverence, check this out: God: A Career Retrospective.
