The Legacy of Pern

Anne McCaffrey has died. It's a sad day for the science fiction and fantasy community. She was a powerhouse of the genre, helping to pave the way for generations of women creators after her. She also created some very popular worlds, including the Dragonriders of Pern.

I started playing Pern rpgs online in MOOs in 1997, when I was in college. Through those games, I met some of my closest friends, friends I now consider family. I cannot thank Anne enough for not only creating that world, but for encouraging people to populate it themselves, through rpgs like I played, or cosplay.

I probably can't finish these tonight, but since I was in a Pern mood, reminiscing, I went back and looked at some old log files, and sketched the first two characters I played at Dragonsfire MOO.

Calandra, a Weaver of Pern, with her gold firelizard, Vashti )

Zephre, rider of green Miyoth )

I played some other great characters, some of whom I've already drawn. Perhaps one day I'll have a whole portfolio of alter egos from Pern.

Seriously, Dragonsfire MOO people (you know who you are), I am so so so thankful everyday to have you in my life, even long-distance. You've all made a big difference, and I'm really happy that we all liked Anne's world so much we tried to live in it.

Fly high and free, Anne. Thanks.

ART: Desert Princess (Original, G)

So this is mostly inspired by the exhibit "Afghan Gold" that came through the Museum of Fine Arts here a few years ago. I just couldn't keep the idea out of my head, so here's a much-evolved version of the concept.

Title: Desert Princess
Artist: [personal profile] zephre
Rating: G
Fandom: Original Character
Notes: This piece is done without top-layer lines. I did a very basic outline to place her features, then built it up in layers of color applied with fairly thick brushes. I'm pretty pleased with the effect.

Let's have some Merlin art...

I've been busy on the Merlin front lately. One piece I can't show yet, but I can't wait until I can...
The others are under the cuts. They are all rated G or PG for flirting and one kiss-on-the-temple. Two are show-related, one is RPS (but there's really nothing to say so except the description, so you can pretend it's Merlin and Arthur if you want).

ART: Rosie, Top Student in Necromancy (PG-13)

I've started taking in the Character of the Week challenge at ConceptArt.org, although I have only completed one so far.  That one was Rosie.  The assignment:
Rosie von Kreuzberg is top student in Necromancy at the University of Dark Arts. This school has been around for hundreds of years and only the most talented students are accepted! With her talents and skills, Rosie could easily become the most powerful Necromancer in history...

Title: Rosie, in the lab
Artist: [personal profile] zephre
Rating: PG-13
Content: blood, dead animals
Character: Original, per the assignment
Artists' Notes: When I posted this I didn't really expect much except a good excuse to get drawing, but a few folks on the site actually voted for it in the poll!  Neat!
