Saturday

Brief updates:

- Work deadline got away from me, with the result that the last few days at the office were frantic with updates, and we barely got our stuff done. I have a long list of rushed items for next week as well. Fun times.

- Difficulties with having a dynastic name: people looking for my brother on Facebook often friend my dad instead. Is it wrong that I find that hilarious?

- So so so addicted to more fanfic. Holy cow. X-men fanfic is eating my life. In the best way. Also, my obsession with mpreg has successfully translated from Harry Potter fandom. What is wrong with me. ;)

- Went to a preview showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and it was AWESOME. I need to go back again. I have a few nits to pick about it, and one big issue of an internal logic hole, but on the whole it was amazing and such a beautiful experience. The audience was not totally fans, so when I squealed and clapped I had a few companions but not as many as I had when watching the movies at Cons. Also, I ♥ Neville.

- My nonprofit corporation obligations are increasing, bringing with them a slew of committee meetings. This will hopefully lead to some great things for the organization, but it is definitely something that I will have to adjust to in my schedule.

- Except for the illustrations for my paperlegends big bang, I am frustrated by art. I am incredibly inspired lately, but stymied by my own ability, not only with art in general but with the software and digital techniques in particular. Big Bangs have a separate category for me, since they are so often done with extreme time limits - working at marathon fast-paint settings loosens some of my internal critic's stress, and allows me to produce without too much angst. I think I need to try some other prompts or subject matter, after this big bang is done. I may take a break from fan art, even though that means that I'll probably get even less community feedback. (boo.) Just to try to push some skill envelopes.

- Writing? What writing? At least the writers' meetup has been going well.

cleaning up and catching up

Ok, I have finally moved a bunch of the boxes that have been cluttering up my apartment for months. Plus I have stacked all the ApolloCon stuff to one side, so while it's still there, it's no longer actively blocking my creative outlets. (By which I mean the sewing table is once again clear.)

So, ApolloCon happened. It was fun. My costume went over well on Saturday. I got to meet Darth Vader at the Artist Reception.
It's Darth Vader!
Yay! A thousand dreams from my childhood given form! You know it's a party when the Sith crash it.

Among the boxes that I moved/emptied were the ones holding my grandmother's doll collection. All of the dolls have now been photographed and placed on display in my apartment. She had a really amazing group from Poland, dressed in regional folk costume. The workmanship and tiny details are lovely.

Now to get the rest of my stuff organized and/or thrown out.

I'm also well into the art for my paperlegends entry, which is good. I was worried for a bit, but now things are coming together, I think.

stuff, things, travel

So I find myself suddenly traveling to Nashville for a conference next week. Anybody know any good places to visit if I have downtime? I've only really ever driven through on my way somewhere else, taking time to visit the Parthenon and not much besides. I shall be there on weekdays.

This comes at an interesting time of year for me, since we are gearing up for ApolloCon the last weekend in June. (Houston's Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Convention, full of awesome! I'm in the Art Show, too. Come on down!)

Work = Intense as well. Fun, but intense. We've got some stuff going on. :)

Art is progressing. I'm thinking that one of my challenge entries is going to involve major angst, and Colin Morgan's face just lends itself to that so well. I'll have to find some cute fic to get me through it all. LOL.
I've been contemplating fic writing, too. Although I must have a rule that I make progress on my original fic (I can pretend I'm writing fanfic for it, right?) before I indulge.

Speaking of fic, I am almost at the point in my BSG viewing where it will be safe for me to announce that I would like to read all the Adama/Roslin fic in the land. I may also have to create a very belated reaction post to the end of the series, as everyone I know has lately reiterated to me just how badly the show ends.

I have several Dreamwidth invite codes if anybody wants one, by the way.

adorable little sister and other news

Baby sister Gabi:
Gabi in the grassGabi at rest
How cute is she? SO CUTE!
I had to take my car to get the headlight replaced, and since the dealership is close to the ancestral homestead, I spent the afternoon doing a bit of light "work from home", listening to the wind chimes on the patio, and photographing the puppy.
She was very excited to see me - family claim this is because of the Full Moon, but Gabi is just like that. She was very sad when Dad left for a work trip, though. She must hate that luggage, it means her best buddy is going to be gone for a while.

So, yeah, my car. Poor darling filthy Lila is really in need of a bath and some paint touch-up, but the thing I visited for was the headlight. It took two hours to get the news that yes, it was a headlight bulb and not a computer glitch, and another two hours to get the thing replaced. (What kind of vehicle is constructed such that you have to remove the front bumper to put in a light bulb? Geez, Toyota.) Although the process took forever, I do like the guys at the Service Dept of the dealership, so that's nice.
I will have to take her back for her full check-up and inspection next month after the expenses settle.

I am planning to enter the Art Show at ApolloCon 2011, and need to get my slate of stuff together. I'm not sure of the audience there for my stuff, but I don't enter to sell things, really, just to do it and say that I did. I think that if I finish the gnomes, and the Star Wars art, and maybe do something else Star Wars related, I could furnish a pretty good variety on the panel. (I am definitely including my portrait of Sir Leon, even if nobody knows who he is. He's too awesome not to showcase.)
