I have this unfinished WIP that was really close to my heart - and still is, in its way, and I'm wondering now whether or not to finish it. It's a one-shot featuring Harry and Luna, in my Far Away as Moonshine ''verse, which I love to pieces despite the extreme rarepair-ness of it. :P

I also have a bunch of prompts to fulfill for my now-defunct but still inspiring table on Luna.
Haven't been feeling the writing bug lately, but now that my ApolloCon stress is mostly done for the year, and I'm gearing up for Azkatraz, HP is back on the brain. (And I just can't do fic for Merlin yet. It took me years to work up to it in HP, maybe someday.)

To write, or not to write? Maybe I'll just keep drawing...

And oh crap, officially less than two weeks to the Con and I need to frame my art for the Gallery and Auction!
And print postcards... And test my DVD cable... And move all the pr0n off the laptop that's traveling with me. Yeep.

ART: "We have wine." (Merlin, G)

So for weeks now I have been working in small increments to get a grip on Corel Painter (ok, months, but weeks in the case of this particular piece) in order to make some art in a different style.
This is an illustration for a fic in the BBC's Merlin universe, and I've used pre-Raphaelite inspiration, mainly Lawrence Alma-Tadema, especially for Gwen and Merlin, which some viewers may recognize.
I wouldn't say I was pleased with it, exactly, although I feel that it's an improvement over some of my previous Merlin attempts. I do love Gwen here, though.
Now I'd best get back to working on the deadlines and commission.

Title: "We have wine."
Artist: zephre
Rating: G
Characters: Merlin, Gwen, Morgana, Arthur
Medium: Painter with Photoshop touchup.
Summary: An illustration from the Arthur/Merlin fic, Awash with Love by burkesl17. Merlin climbs to the top of the castle to discover Gwen, Morgana, and Arthur sharing wine and lamenting their situation.
Notes: A not-so-subtle homage to Lawrence Alma-Tadema and the pre-Raphaelites.

TV and racebending

So my Mom told me she followed the link from my LJ to sign the petition at racebending.com about the whitewashed casting of the Avatar: the Last Airbender movie.
Is that everybody now? Go sign it!

Also, the TV and DVD player are both installed and working beautifully, and MY GOD Colin Morgan is adorable when his face is a foot tall in my living room. ;)

Now all I have to do is actually build my IKEA furniture.
And finish my art before deadline.

Also, I posted a bunch of art here the other day because I'd forgotten to add it to this journal. Reveals for a couple exchanges and my contribution to LJ's hump_day_smut for the last few months.

watercolor report

This week we started experimenting with the printing press at the Art League, using clear acetate and watercolor paper.

And after I did my run on the press, I didn't feel inspired to add watercolor to the pieces so I did a new one.

watercolor report

I finished the painting from last week, which was an exercise in color.
This is Donna at the Lexington Avenue N train platform, based on a photo I took in 2005, before we both moved to Houston. This has a touch of prismacolor in it from when I was trying to even up the lines and shapes, but it's mostly free brush over light graphite outlines. Next time I do something like this I may actually block out the letters with a resist first. But it's groovy despite the shaky typography.

And then I did a quick still life, as that was the class for today. I think it still needs something, maybe a bolder hand with the lavender background, or some highlights or somethnig, but on the whole I'm very pleased.

Next week we're supposed to try prints. Fun!

snarry games

Well, it's official. I'm a Snitch.
In true comic timing, my tablet pen has given up the ghost. I decided to use the excuse to update my entire Intuos set up. The new one is in the mail.
I am in intimidating company, so I shall have to give some thought to how best to use my time to get some really compelling work done for the team.

2009 SNARRY GAMES - Team Snitch vs. Team Cauldron!

star trek etc

I love going to see movies with my parents. They are a riot.

So Kirk and Sulu and the other guy (Olson or something?) are in the shuttle getting ready to drop on the planet, and Mom leans over and says, "I can't understand anything he's saying. Is that Scotty?" and I leaned back and said, "Mom. He's wearing the red suit." and she just about fell over laughing.

Also, she thinks Sulu is totally hot. (And really, who doesn't?)

We got into an interesting discussion about ship protocol and the officer corps, and the train of barely-glued logic that ended up with all our fresh-faced cadets ending up as bridge crew within the first few hours of their maiden voyage.

Everybody liked Nero as a villain, loved his backstory, and enjoyed the dramatic tension as we learn just what happened.

There was a collective gasp (from the three of us, if not the entire theater) when Spock Prime appeared, because I had somehow managed to remain totally ignorant of the fact that Nimoy actually has a significant speaking part, and my parents don't really follow the reviews.

I loved the Spock/Uhura romance, it had so many interesting implications for Spock and their time at the Academy. And of course, I loved that Kirk spent the entire film trying to find out her name. I loved the moments of conflict and understanding between Spock and Kirk - it really was like this was a new establishment of their friendship. That said, I do wish that we had gotten to see more of Uhura just being her awesome Starfleet officer cadet self, instead of the female sex object for whom Kirk and Spock both now lust.

The fact of the alternate universe really intrigued me, especially given how quickly the "old team" got together as mere youths. Even Scotty joined by the end, and is poised to change the way Starfleet thinks about transport. I would love to see the next few incarnations of these characters.

Mom and Dad loved all the throw-back lines quoting the previous shows. They caught more of them than I did, I think.

And Dad's comment on the much-hyped and maligned bridge design was that in the 60s, the Enterprise bridge was a logical extension of then-available technology. This new bridge is no different, and probably looked familiar to anyone who studies military history or modern warfare. I thought that was a pretty enlightening comment, although I already liked the new bridge design.

I just don't understand why they don't have banks of pressure suits at every door, and seat belts or straps at least available if not in constant use. The fact that the bridge glass / screen actually cracked in the gravitational pull of the black hole brought that home - they just give up the entire bridge crew for dead if there's a hull breach in the area. Just a thought. Maybe in whatever century it was those jumpsuits are actually nanotechnology-fueled pressure suits in their dormant states.

That segues nicely into my only continuing Classic Star Trek costume quibble, and that is of course the miniskirts. Cute, sure. Sexy on fit cadet bodies, absolutely. Possibly acceptable as formal presentation wear while planetside, sure. But as a working uniform? Jumpsuits at least have the advantage of being easy to load into a pressure suit, see above re: emergency evac. I admit, they're part of the classic Trek canon so not exactly easy to get rid of, but they just aren't very practical.

So. You can tell that at the point I am reduced to ranting about costumes, the movie must have blown me away. I want to go see it again.

Also, there was a preview for G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra and I squealed in excitement in the first three seconds, which made everybody look at me funny. Sorry, but I recognized it immediately by the menacing Christopher Eccleston surrounded by evil types. Yay!

Mom did comment that so many of the movies we saw previews for were dark and violent. I was horrified by the preview for the new Tarantino film, and the ones for Transformers and Terminator both involved a bit of robot apocalypse so they were also really dark. Terminator moreso than Transformers in terms of actually being almost always dark and dreary with guts and explosions, but... can we maybe make a few good SF movies that aren't marketed solely to video gamers?

art decisions

I'm planning to put four of my Tarot cards in a frame for display at the Azkatraz Dungeon of Art, but I'm having trouble deciding which ones.
At first, I was going to use the Aces, because I love them, but then I thought perhaps some of the book characters would be better, and more fitting to the con theme (Hanged Man, for instance?).
So now I can't decide.

Anybody have any ideas? Here's a link to the cards I've done:
http://zephre.insanejournal.com/tag/art:+hp+tarot

If I don't do the Aces, I thought perhaps The Lovers, Death, The Hanged Man, and Temperance?

Or perhaps somebody else has a card they really think is excellent that I'm not remembering...

Please do comment if you know the work.

catching up...

Catching this journal up...

Mid-trip Report, Thursday April 30:
Museums visited:
- The Museum of the City of New York (Awesome! This is a small but mighty place. Wonderful paintings of ironwork from historic brownstone front stoops; new miniature paintings and dolls from the Dollhouse; an exhibit about Dutch New Amsterdam and Hudson; and a big display of dresses from the Valentina line. Oooh.)
- The Guggenheim (terrible - they had the entire thing dismantled to install a new Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit, so you couldn't really walk any of it. We paid $6 to see about 35 paintings in the two open side galleries and take photos from the ground floor. Meh.)
- The American Museum of Natural History (Fun! We went to a planetarium show, I fangirled Neil DeGrasse Tyson, we petted the meteorite in captivity, we went through lots of amusing taxidermy and dioramas, learned about Human Origins, and saw dinosaur bones.)
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Pretty good. I went specifically to see Madame X by John Singer Sargent, but she had been taken out of her gallery. D'oh! So I visited William, as I do every time I am there if his gallery is open, and saw lots of other 19th and early 20th century paintings, skipped through some of the Asian art, zipped through European Deco and Medieval Art, lingered in the Classical Sculpture atrium, ran through the Greek and Roman galleries, and did something I have never done before - I went to the Roof Garden. Yay!)

Also trekked across Central Park by way of both open levels of Belvedere Castle.
Result of the two days walking: two blisters, one on the bottom of each foot. Ow ow ow.

I also got to have lunch with Carolina today, and yesterday I met some great tarot folks whom I will see again this weekend.
Last night was Liam's Birthday Quiz at the Baker Street Pub. We had a nice group of Squirrels out for it, surprising Liam, and we gave him a card from all of us. (Note to self: never go into the children's card section of CVS with E. Had we goten any more hysterical I'm sure they would have thrown us right out.)

Also, have eaten Vietnamese, Thai and Indian so far. No major stomach issues. Hooray!

Tonight is the Rocky Sullivan's Pub Quiz out in Red Hook, and I expect we will be getting in from that quite late. I am leaving in the morning for the conference in NJ.

and a Readers' Studio report:

It's a wow sort of weekend, Saturday, May 2:
Ok, you guys, the Readers' Studio is seriously blowing my mind. It's incredible.
And the people are wonderful.
I went to a study group tonight that was just amazing, with a funny, brilliant teacher who gave out *ribbons*! Eee! Plus one of the readings I did at the table not only blew my mind, but resonated with eerie symmetry with the reading of the girl across the table. Egads!
Bonus, at the afternoon Master Class I got to play the part of Contessa Jadwiga the amazing and beautiful fortune teller with a funny accent (that varied between Slavic and Scottish, LOL), a huge ego, and a sensational attitude. I'd never read cards like that before and it was totally liberating as well as raucously funny.
In short, I'm having a great time and trying not to spend all my money on stuff. Always a tough proposition, but I'm determined to make it through! Besides, so much is being given away for free I'll have trouble packing as it is.

Tomorrow is the last day, and then it's back to Manhattan for further cramming of social time with NY peeps.
And now, to bed.

Also, Happy Belated Beltane - we had a good time last night, so much so that I was out at Studio events until after midnight. Fun times indeed.

The finish of the Readers' Studio was great, and then yesterday I got to see Michelle and Andy and Milo and Vic and Ali for dinner, then E and I played the first half of a cutthroat game of Super Deluxe Double Scrabble, which has twice the tiles and a bigger board featuring QUADRUPLE letter and word scores. w00t!

a tale of travel

Ok, I'm going to see how much of this I can get typed before my battery warning goes.

Yesterday a huge storm front started through southeast Texas, and it was still here this morning. Parts of west Houston were so badly flooded that school was cancelled and people (like my dad) were told to work from home. Mom and I braved the rain at 5:30 am anyhow to go to the airport.
I arrived in good time at the gate, where we were told that we were delayed because our pilots were in Austin and couldn't take off because of the weather in Houston.
My 7:56am flight ended up taking off just after 9am.
So I arrived in Newark late, and made a plan with E that I would just hang out in Union Square to wait for her because there was no way I'd get to her place by 2pm. It was 1:30pm when I got off the plane, and at about 2:15 the NJ Transit train I was on heading for Manhattan stopped at Secaucus Junction. And sat. And sat. And then the conductor got on the speakers and told us we were delayed because there was a huge brushfire blocking the tunnel to Manhattan. NO trains were getting through in either direction until the fire was under control.
At this point I am really regretting not getting something to eat at EWR, so I ate one of my emergency protein bars. Thanks fro that tip, Mom!
Well, I sat in the train for almost an hour before they told us the train was officially terminated and the whole lot of us went to transfer to an NJT to Hoboken to get the PATH train, which was nowthe only way to get to Manhattan. On the train to Hoboken we can see the smoke from what really looks like a HUGE fire over the ridge, and there are at least three fire department helicopters in the sky.
So we took that train, then the PATH, and it was crazy but orderly and we didn't have to pay extra. I got above ground in Manhattan at 6th Ave and 14th Street a little after 4pm. I stopped to get a mechanical pencil, go to the restroom, and pick up something to eat.
Now I am sitting in some dappled shade in Union Square where there is free wireless (I <3 NY) eating a goat cheese salad from Whole Foods Market and wondering if I should take off my shoes and socks. It's hot! And I have a tiny bit of battery conserved but not enough to do anything of substance except post this.
So I will. :)

intermission

Hello, Fandom.
I hope I've gotten all my looming deadlines in because I am miles from my tablet... soon to be 1800 miles!
I'll be in New York City for the next week - Tuesday to Tuesday.
The Tarot Reader's Studio is Beltane Weekend, plus there shall be much social time with friends far and near, including visiting from Australia. Yay! Glee! Wahoo!

I'll likely not be out of electronic contact, but it all will depend on the ready availability of computers and/or wireless.

Coming in May, I hope: finishing the unfinished fanart in the archives. Plus of course the next set of deadlines. Fun times, indeed.

watercolor report

This is what I started last week as an exercise in values and shapes.
Portrait of a Man

This one was for our class on scale - in this case man and vast weather.
Afghan Wind Storm

general update

Ok, so I noted that I haven't updated here with anything of substance in over two weeks, which we all know is the internet equivalent of ten million years.
I'm still living in what I like to call cardboard chic, a house full of piles and boxes and no real organization.
True to prediction, though, I am spending a lot less time at home. Dinner and/or coffee with friends, meetings, meet-ups, a con, family events, and evening classes have all conspired to keep me far from home.
And I'm going out of town for a week starting next Tuesday. I'll be in the New York metro area, attending the Tarot Reader's Studio as well as hanging out with my beloved friends in the vicinity (and some coming in to town from afar, including Australia! Wow!).
That said, I expect to be spending more time at home in May. I have quilts to make and paintings to paint, for one thing. Plus a lot of tarot cards and still some fan exchanges to finish. Plus the three Big Bangs I decided to sign up for. Mmm, fun. I also have books to unpack and an apartment to arrange. I also plan to acquire an actual TV. No, really! I'm going to set it up and watch it and everything. Probably.

That plus the whole Summer of Cons (ApolloCon, Azkatraz, Anticipation - I sense a theme here.) should keep me busy.

ART! Finally, ART!

Yes, people, it's the return of the weekly watercolor class reports! Until I get my household in order, this may be the only art for a while!

Slightly wilted flowers

Still Life on Green Plate

You can see a photo of the actual still life (from a slightly different angle, alas) at my Flickr set.

adventures in moving

So it was pouring rain this morning, but the storm had blown through by the time the movers arrived.
Adventure the First: in securing the dog, I was sure that I had accidentally let the cat outside, which wasn't a terrible crisis necessarily but it's always worrying in a neighborhood so rife with strays. We fretted about that while the guys moved the boxes and stuff, and searched the house to no avail.
Well, Peter called me when I was at the new place unloading to tell me that the cat was found, in a busy corner of the garage.

Adventure the Second: arrived at apartment, began unloading process. No problems with any of the boxes or furniture, and the place is well-lit by daylight and relatively cool, so at first I don't realize that the electricity is completely out. Finally somebody tries to turn on the bathroom lights without success, and I flip every switch and realize that while the fridge and AC are apparently on standby, the power is pretty much out.
So I call Gexa who calls Centerpoint who says the power is on from their end, check the breaker box. So I call maintenance and they come by and fiddle and lo, the lights work.
Well, not quite.
I turned the AC on, and the lights flickered, then next time I went to hit the switch, nothing. The AC is blowing but now the lights AND the fridge have gone off. Hm.
Call maintenance again (by this time the movers are done and gone) and they come by and promise to have things fixed this afternoon, so I go to lunch with mom. When I get back, still no power, but there's a maintenance guy out by the boxes.
Hopefully by the time I get to sleeping at the place, the power will be reliably back on.

Also, the doc has taken me off the meds and says to see how I do in my new situation with acupuncture and tai chi and everything. Mostly it's the diet - continuing to do either the No Sugar/Flour Food Plan or the modified hypoglycemic food plan - that may make a difference. I'm to report back in three months, unless the symptoms get worse or change drastically.

So that's that.

Especially for fandom:

I AM MOVING THIS WEEK.

This means that I will have questionable access to: the fandom parts of the internet (you know what I mean), my art supplies, and in fact, all my stuff.

I'll try to be back and on point for any pending deadlines by this weekend, but it'll depend on how cooperative the cable modem is.

Hey, I get a bed on Friday! w00t!

still packing

Packing, shopping for a bed, figuring out that maybe I'm hypoglycemic in addition to the stomach issues because I almost passed out and was shaking Friday night and had to miss a birthday gathering for a friend because I didn't trust myself to drive. :(
But Saturday was much better and I watched what I ate and there were birthday people to greet and a party to go to. (Why is almost everybody I know born in March?) Donna and Jon and Lando the Magnificent Walking, Babbling, Playing Boy met me for Donna's birthday lunch, and have now seen my apartment, empty and echoing. Lando christened it with drool and laughter, so yay.

Then I went to my cousin Dave's birthday party, which was a live action role-playing card game called Long Live the King. It was pretty awesome, although I was still trying to control my headachy symptoms (plus even I get a couple weeks when the pollen wreaks havoc with my sinuses). I played the Archbishop with a 3-minute Mitre made of construction paper, while there were vast levels of costumery among the other folks. From simple tunics and capes to full-on Henry VIII style gear, it was a good night for costumes.
I didn't know most of the people there, because this cousin was one of the ones that I used to see only for Christmas each year, if then. But he's discovered that I'm a geek and a gamer, so now I get invited to these things. :)
It was a fun time, but as with many of these games, I think that the next time it's played, things will go much more smoothly. Last night we were a bit confused about what we could and could not do, and nobody knew exactly how to win. It always takes at least one round for the players to really grok the strategy. So, I can only hope we find excuses to play again!

Also, another cousin had a birthday last week (and I should have e-mailed him or something - bad me.) and Peter and Hillary are Tuesday and today, respectively.
March - a popular month for being born.

Today mom and I have made it our mission to buy me a bed, and then I have to get the rest of the assorted misc junk off my floor and shelves and into boxes, because the movers are coming on THURSDAY. Yeep.

fun friday, busy saturday

Happy Pi Day!

Last night I went to see Jonathan Coulton with Paul & Storm, of whom I had never really heard before last summer, nor ever seen perform, whether on youtube or live. It was a really fantastic performance with lots of humor and audience interaction. Paul and Storm's opening show had me falling over laughing. Jonathan broke a string on his guitar in the first song, then later discovered his mouth harp was in the frame backwards. It being Friday the 13th, he joked, of course things went a bit awry. But none of that really interfered with the show, or the music. I could have done without the hair-flinging, loud-singing guy sitting one row down from me, but every concert-goer has crosses to bear, and as concerts go a hair-flinging, loud-singing obnoxious dude is better than drunken groping or being fallen on.
At one point near the end the entire balcony was doing Thriller-type zombie gesturing from their seats while shouting "All we want to do is eat your brains." Yeah. Nerds in groups. I should have taken photos. (The few I did take will be posted later, mostly of House of Blues itself.)
I went out with a party of six folks from the Houston SFF community, all active con-goers or organizers. We had dinner first with a few of them, then met at House of Blues downtown, where there were a bunch of other local nerds that folks in my party knew. We ended up with seating right near each other in the balcony, oddly enough.
After the concert, we all went to a diner/coffeehouse on Westheimer and had food and drink and conversation until after midnight. I did not get back to my car (I'd been ridesharing to avoid the downtown/midtown parking crunch) until 1:30 am.
I haven't had a night out like that in quite some time, so it was pretty awesome.

Today I woke up at an ungodly hour to take care of my unruly stomach (it's pretty much a clockwork alarm all on its own - 6:25 am it wakes me without fail, just before my alarm. I nibbled on a rice cracker and some orange juice and chatted with mom for a few minutes, then crashed again. I got up for real at about 11, and looked soberly at the packing I should be doing... and turned away.
Instead, I cut some batting and the backing fabric for the quilt in progress, pinned it all together and trimmed it, and now I'm working on attaching the border pieces to the front before getting in there with the machine quilting.
Ideally I would like to have this finished in time to take it to New York at the end of April and present it to the recipients in person. I may not finish it before I move, but I'll definitely try to get as much done as possible before then, and keep the pieces in a separate box so I can find them pronto in the new place.

I just finished giving the kitchen floor a sweep and clean and mop, so I'm taking a sit-down break in front of a fan to type this up. My only minor angst today is that I really wanted to watch Ghostbusters while I did my sewing but I couldn't find the DVD. I am pretty sure that I actually bought my own copy, but I could be mistaken. (Sorting out my stuff from the family stuff will be such fun!) I put on The Last Unicorn with Real Genius in the bullpen instead.

Ok, and Dad just told me a joke he heard on Prairie Home Companion and I didn't know enough about music to get the pun in the punchline without clarification. FAIL. :P He needs to tell it to Peter.

quilt making and other stuff

Good: finished the quilt top, except for the photos, which can be put in later on top of the quilting.
Bad: couldn't print the photos because my printer is borked and full of blots, and the parental printer is out of color ink. D'oh.

But it was a good day for progress.
Had a mediocre weekend health-wise, with some downs and some okays, and even this afternoon when things were really good.
Did not go to the art museum, but will hopefully get that in soon.
I need to start making some lists in anticipation of my move, whenever that ends up being.

Haven't finished my art for Wednesday yet. Coming up on a series of deadlines now, plus I'm now signed up for THREE Big Bangs in a row this summer. Geez. Not only is it con season, but I've signed up to illustrate novellas in two fandoms. Fun times, indeed. ;) At least there isn't any active overlap in production time, nor any crucial overlap with my travel times.

And now, snack time then bed, with fanfic. Yay fanfic.

watercolor report

Today I whipped out two decent pieces, instead of the usual one awesome one and one craptastic one.
Of course, that means I now have fewer duds to noodle on the back of, but oh, well. Our exercise was "saving the whites" for which we mostly painted laundry.

Laundry with fence:

This one has some wax pencil on it, which didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped.

Laundry up a hill:
