Artist's Notes: There's a story to this one.... [Story and Art under cut.] Drawn for m_frantic for merlin_holidays.
Once upon a time, a dutiful son called Merlin agreed to leave his home to serve a Great White Bear in the north, to spare his family the anger of a sorcerer. Each night in the Bear's palace, Merlin was visited by a warm and loving human man, a man whose face he never saw, for their nights were spent in the dark. After a time in the palace, through the machinations of a jealous servant, Merlin grew curious about his bedmate, and contrived to bring a bit of tallow with him to bed and hide it. With this tallow, he looked upon the handsome face of a sleeping prince. But woe for Merlin, a bit of hot tallow dripped upon the prince, who woke when he felt the burn. The prince bitterly scolded Merlin, "Had you only trusted me a few more days, the spell would be broken, and I would be a bear no more." Then he left Merlin there and fled to a different palace, leaving his lover alone. Merlin mourned his loss, but grew even more determined to break the spell upon his beloved... [a variation of the tale East of the Sun, West of the Moon. See link for full annotated text and links to other versions.]
