Oh, Miriam Margulies is so funny. Bradley James, your faaaaace! I find the extremely stilted dialogue between Gwen and Arthur to be almost endearing at this point. I am not invested in their relationship, but I find them cute now. Oh, Uther's got his strict face on. Interesting interpretation of the changeling concept, which allows for the eventual happy ending for the princess. Not so hot on Grunhilda's fae makeup, though. Ahahahaha, Arthur getting outraced by a girl. Fabulous. I love the genuine enjoyment on their faces as they ride. LOL, Merlin. Why did they have her give him that ridiculous hug? "Marrying a Pendragon will secure your future." -- so what will she do now? Interesting questions brought up by that phrase about the world they're in. LOL, how did Colin and Richard get through that scene with the scroll case or whatever that is? LOLOLOL. All the adults watching must be chortling a bit at that. Sneaky Gaius is not very sneaky. Oh, Merlin, old people are allowed to have love lives, too! Silly boy. Oh, god, the intimate family dinner, it's so wrong. Uther's face. And Morgana being all 'I know your secret', and oh, Arthur, you're so sincere. I love Arthur. He's the best character on the show, when the writers get it right. Merlin - spying genius. Are all guests given the rooms with the spyholes? Geez. It's time for Gaius and Merlin's Research Night! Ok, I swear they've used that shot of Arthur and Merlin walking across the courtyard at least twice now. Oh, Morgana being evil, can't you have more than one expression? She's so good and sweet and friendly although she's dissembling, it just makes me so sad over the demise of the Gwen-Morgana relationship. (cf. preview for next episode HOLY SHIT) "Ancient Law of Sod" hahahahaha. I love how even when he has no idea how to make it or what the ingredients are or how to find them, Gaius somehow makes a perfect potion on the first try EVERY TIME. Oh, Gwen. She's so cute. Bradley still has the best faces, even when he's being miserable. I can almost believe in them just based on his face. Sometimes I wish their relationship made any sort of sense! hahahahah. Witches of Meredor = Really good at keeping secrets, maybe Merlin should learn from them. Not everybody can keep getting knocked out like Arthur. Morgana is wearing the I'm A Fucking Villainess Now, Bitch lipstick. Damn. You know, it's actually kind of sad how the "mighty" Sidhe was defeated without much fuss and with NOBODY outside noticing. What will the kingdom of the faeries do now that their ruler is gone? Hahahahaha, "what's the worst that can happen?" the potion could spill. Ok, I'm feeling some empathy for Princess Elena now - having a Sidhe inside you is obviously very much like having IBS. LOL, Merlin's got his mischief face on! Grunhilda gonna get her some action now! Everybody on this show has the best faces, LOL. "I will just watch and wait." --"You will rescue me." Hahahahaha. Merlin has on his I have blackmail material against you for years face now. "We will never speak of it." Holy cow, Grunhilda is harder to stop than they thought! I love Elena so much! "I really wish my mother was here." Oh, sweetie. I hope she gets to come back. "You have no idea what it's like to have a destiny you can't escape." Ok, here Merlin is actually being genuinely insightful and not in a contrived fashion at all. I can really believe that he would just say that because he believes it. His "You are destined to be the greatest king etc" speech just felt so wrong to me, despite the slashy squee. Wow, beautiful indeed. And her whole demeanor changed, as well, she's obviously much more serene and in control of herself now. Lovely acting, there. Nice with the eyes communicating the whole story - it works better there than it did with Morgana, I think. Yay for Elena being strong and wonderful and friendly to Arthur. I love her! Show, bring her back. Ha, Lord Godwin, you are awesome. Ok, that conversation was kind of cute, although it's the little thing Arhur does at the top of the stairs that makes me grin. LOL, Bradley.
Preview: HOLY SHIT MORGANA WHAT?? Total betrayal of Gwen, and does this mean that Arthur will know that she's evil by the end of the ep? I just love the scene when Merlin sees the mark on Gwen's wrist - I don't care what the context is, really, it's just so lovely to see them together and obviously confiding in one another.
The thing I like best about this episode is that although the girl was both a rival for Arthur's affections and possessed by a magical being, she is neither EVIL nor DEAD by episode's end. Thank you, writers! Plus Elena is a genuinely interesting character. The plot of the episode as a whole was a bit contrived, but I found Elena herself extremely interesting. I wanted to know what happened to her after she left Camelot, if she ever came back, if she and Arthur could remain friends and eventually she could be a great ally to Camelot. Maybe she could marry one of his noble knights to cement such an alliance. (Hi, Leon!) Also, maybe she and Vivian could become friends when they visit court in later years, when Albion has come to be (once Vivian's spell has been broken, of course). I mean, we haven't really seen many female peers of Arthur who aren't "evil" and/or dead, and there have to be some, right? Maybe this Camelot, with this Gwen as its queen, might have more involvement from the ladies. Gee, it sounds like I'm going to be writing fic for this season any minute now.
In short, loved it, totally subverted my expectations, and I was genuinely moved by the story for the guest star.
