Quilt Festival Day 1
International Quilt Festival, Day 1:

Totally awesome!
I blew half my festival budget on amber jewelry, but the highlight of the show was still the quilts.

This one is pieced, not painted - I swear.  It's huge, taller than I am, and gorgeous in person. "Medea Escaping".
My flickr set for the show includes the card for this one, and some detail shots.

Wow, that's really fantastic! I love the reds and yellows, and the dragon is epic. What does 'pieced' mean, btw?

when talking quilts, 'piecing' refers to the process of taking small bits of fabric (in traditional quilts, these are often squares) and sewing them together in a pleasing design.
This is sometimes enhanced by painting with fabric paints or pens, adding embellishments like shells or buttons or beads, or using modern technology for things like printing photos onto fabric.
This particular quilt is partially so impressive because it is entirely made of fabric bits and thread, with no painting.

for a bit of contrast, this one is a single large piece of cloth that has been painted as if it were a canvas, then quilted with colored thread in an artistic way:
